We have now lived in this old Irish farmhouse for one entire year. It has been blissful, and at times extremely stressful. Yes both can co-exist! When we moved in this time last year the local farmers were busy saving their hay. I’ve decided to take a photograph of my two children every year sitting together on newly bailed hay in our field … or at least until adolescent hormones strike and they refuse to co-operate for a while … probably returning with nostalgia to the ritual roughly around the age of 30!
When I say ‘moved in’, what that actually translates to is ‘we camped in the garden of this house for several nights before we fashioned a bedroom in which all 4 of us slept until the children’s bedroom was finished.’ Previous to the camping we had estimated the time we would need to rent a house while we completed enough renovations. We relied on our prior renovation experience and carefully calculated 3 weeks. Then knowing just how renovations go in reality, we doubled this to 6 weeks and even added on 3 more weeks to allow for totally unforeseen circumstances. That equated to an over generous total of 9 weeks. 9 months later we ‘moved in’!
Work is still in progress. Indeed anyone familiar with the labour of love that is known as renovation, will confirm that it is actually never finished, but rather an ongoing project.
