Thank you all for your kind words and helpful suggestions regarding the sudden egg production strike by our lovely hens. They suddenly stopped laying for about 10 days and we put it down to a fright they'd had from a dog. My gut instincts tell me this was the reason and just as suddenly as they stopped, they started again. I can't tell you how much we missed those eggs and how it pained me to buy a box from the supermarket! We are wallowing in the glory of sunshine yellow egg yolks which are not that colour as a result from colourings we add to their feed, as many commercial producers do.
And to those of you who were interested in my mention of pickled eggs ... I hope to show you how its done in a few days time (mind you, I work in Irish time, so could be in a week or two!).
Ours are back laying too - hurrah - though we still can't find where the ducks are laying.

Congratulations! What a relief.
Strangely enough, at our Farmer's Market we can buy local eggs, but they're not free range. The free range ones have double to mileage... I do remember those right-out-of-the-coop eggs (my parents' neighbors used to have a couple of chickens). Soooo tasty!
Bon appetit!

I buy my eggs from the farmer's market. They are free range and yet, they still don't taste as good or as special as the eggs my parents get at the cottage. I think you have to go right to the source to get the good eggs.

I'm so happy that your hens are laying again. Nothing like eggs fresh from the nest! We had a very cold winter and I had to purchase eggs for the first time in 3 years.

Hi, I read with interest all the comments about getting chooks to lay again, I hope it would be OK to link to that post sometime soon as my friends and I have so many poultry discussions. Love your blog!

Well the organic and free range eggs I can buy does not taste as good as my own. And I know why it is not only because they are not so fresh but they feed the hens with a commercial( organic)
feed with all kinds of weird stuff in.
While my eggs are made of wheat, oats, oystershells, seeds, stuff from the kitchen and plenty of grass, weeds and bugs etc...= tasty yellow eggs.

So glad to hear the eggs are back! And I shall certainly look forward to hearing about the pickled eggs, whenever Irish time allows you to do so hehe

Glad there laying again, Stuart often makes himself a jar of picked eggs and around Halloween he likes to marble them with food colouring and paint eyeballs on them with the icing pens, looks gross!

So glad to see that you're getting eggs again. Sometimes it's the little things that can throw them off and there's nothing to do but wait it out. Can't wait to hear how the pickled eggs turn out!
