As the beautiful golden hues of Autumn roll in, summer is beginning to fade into warm sunny memories. The last of the borage and nasturtium flowers are still in bloom and add a welcome dash of colour to the garnish of any dish. Even some of the winter stews I’ve been making look great with one of these edible flowers on the side of the plate. My first attempt at growing onions was a roaring success, despite the fact that I did everything wrong they still managed to survive! It was so easy. Buy a packet of onion sets for a couple of Euro and put them on top of the soil (not buried like I did in an ignorant form of accidental sabotage!). In a few months pick about E100 worth of onions and make onion ropes. I can’t begin to describe the feelings of sheer satisfaction in harvesting organic vegetables from my very own garden. Its great fun, it keeps me fit, the kids love to help out, its cheap and it tastes delicious. If I can do it, anyone can! I’m really looking forward to November … because that’s when I get to plant my organic garlic!
Congratulations on your beautiful onions success! LOL, I, too, am looking forward to November. My (super high dollar splurge long story) planting garlic just arrived this week, but I'm waiting until the right moonsign time to plant it. Of course I'm so excited that yesterday I was already in the garden deciding which bed to put it in.

I love your photographs they always look so luscious. I'm amazed at your lovely fat juicy onions, I'd be chuffed to bits if I'd grown those. I'll have to have a go next year now I have a little more time on my hands - I've always dreamt of having a little kitchen garden.

Thanks farmgirl, love your own farm blog, very inspirational and fantastic photos.
Julie, I chucked a couple of old pieces of carpet this time last year on areas I planned to plant up in spring. It killed off the weeds and digging over was easier.
Hi Cherry, will pass on the tutorial on onion rope making my MIL gave me when your time comes. I bet you would have some great ideas for decorating the ropes.
